At the exhibition you can see a photo portrait of Alexander III wearing his coronation uniform - full-dress general's coat, and the mantle of his wife Maria Fyodorovna which was executed in 1896 on the occasion of the enthronement of her son, Nicholas II. The style of the uniform reflects the tendency of the Emperor to simplify the official dress in imitation of Russian national costume. He wore a uniform when attending receptions and balls and also for his coronation ceremony in 1883.

Having been made made of dark-green cloth without almost any decorations or insignia of the military orders, the coat resembles a male upper garment of medieval Russia - zipun, which was fastened with its edges. The slit opening on the chest was a new feature in Russian coronation dress, allowing the monarch to be anointed over his heart without removing his coat.
