Amateur Scholars of Russian History. Pavel Karabanov and Moscow Collectors of the 19th Century

The publication, timed to coincide with the exhibition at the Moscow Kremlin Museums, is dedicated to the prominent Moscow collector P.F. Karabanov.  The catalogue also tells the story of other collectors of the time, including Count A.I. Musin-Pushkin, Prince N.B. Yusupov, Prince M.A. Obolensky, and historian M.P. Pogodin. The preface to the book tells us about the life of P.F. Karabanov and the reasons for his interest in collecting rarities and historical relics. Special attention is paid to the history of the collector's creation of the Russian Museum in Moscow, which housed numerous pieces representing antiquity in all its diversity.

The sections of the catalogue contain brief descriptions of the exhibits that once belonged to Pavel Karabanov and other Moscow collectors and later became part of the collections of the largest museums in the country, such as the Moscow Kremlin Museums, the State Historical Museum and the State Hermitage. The House of the Romanov Boyars in Varvarka Street was not neglected either. It was there that an exhibition was created displaying many works from the collection of P.F. Karabanov, since they had been transferred to the Armoury Chamber in accordance with the collector's will. After decades of neglect, the House of the Romanov Boyars was restored as a branch of the State Historical Museum.

The objects introduced in the edition belong to various types of art, i.e. icons and religious objects, Russian and Western European silverware, Oriental products, arms, ancient utensils, embroidery and accessories of ancient costumes. Of particular interest is the chapter devoted to forgeries, which collectors inevitably came across. This catalogue will be of interest to specialists in history and art history, as well as to the general reader interested in Russian history and culture.
