“Historical Arms and Armour in Museum and Private Collections”

November 8-10, 2016

Dear colleagues,

The Moscow Kremlin State Historical and Cultural Museum and Heritage Site invites you to take part in an International Scientific Conference “Historical Arms and Armour in Museum and Private Collections”, dedicated to the 210th Anniversary of the Armoury Chamber museum.

The aim of the conference is: introduction of new works of arms and armour; information exchange about separate historical items and collections of arms and armour both museum and private; discussions about problems of storage, exhibit and restoration. According to tradition of scientific conferences of weapon-studies historians, the conference in the Moscow Kremlin Museums will raise a wide range of issues on present-day weapon studies.

Topics for discussion are:

  • The Moscow Kremlin’s Armoury Chamber as a center of gun smithing
  • Historical centers of gun smithery and court workshops in Russia, European and Oriental countries
  • General problems in history of arms and armament
  • History of separate samples and masterpieces of gun smithery
  • History of gun smithery and its technology
  • History of arms and armour collections
  • Gunsmiths, gun designers, owners and collectors of arms and armour
  • Archival sources about museum items
  • New attribution of arms and armoury
  • History of arms and armament provenance
  • Arms and armament in cultural context: its reflection in fine arts and literature
  • Historical arms in present-day legislation: global experience and norms of Russian Federation

The conference is to be held in November 8-10, 2016 at the Moscow Kremlin State Historical and Cultural Museum and Heritage Site. Meetings start at 10:30 a.m. The admission to the Kremlin territory is through the Borovitsky Tower gates.
