In the XVIth-XVIIth century ceremonial horse harness and equipage became the essential requirements for successful foreign policy and developing of international prestige of Russia. These exhibits show the great importance attached to ceremonial processions and receptions of foreign envoys, ambassadors, royal hunting and other official state ceremonies.
The Kremlin Stables Office, established in the late XVth century to supervise the stables' treasury and workshops, was in charge of equipage, horses, harness, carriages.
Views of equipages and ceremonial horse harness in water-colours are worthy of particular attention. Pure forms and outstanding draughtsmanship reveal the beauty of design and material of the items as well as interesting details of decor and even carriages' construction.
