Refectory

Metropolitan Alexey"s coffin cover. Moscow. Tsarina"s workshop. 1650.
In the five showcases of the Patriarch's Palace's refectory on display is the XVIIth century Russian artistic embroidery collection, presenting pictorial and ornamental embroidery as the two main types.

The pictorial embroidery is exhibited in all its variety. One can see artworks by illustrious artistic workshops: the Tsarina's, the Godunovs', the Staritsky workshop.

Of particular historical and artistic value are big shrouds, which adorned altars or were suspended under icons, covers of altar tables, sudariums for church vessels, sindons and tombstone mantles of saints.

A separate showcase displays rare examples of ornamental embroidery: velvet cuffs and a collar, a silk gold-thread shawl, a knives-and- forks stand and graceful women's shoes.
