Jonah, Metropolitan of Moscow, and the whole Rus (1434 - 1459), was elected Metropolitan of Russia at the Council of Russian bishops without confirmation by the Patriarch of Constantinople. Since that time, the Russian Church became independent. In 1586, on the order of Tsar Theodore Ioannovich, silver chased lining was executed for Metropolitan Jonah’s burial vault.  The burial place of metropolitan Jonah was the only one to survive during the French invasion of 1812.
