Summer carriage

Summer carriage. England, 1770s. Presented by Count G. Orlov to Empress Catherine the Great
The splendid two-seated summer carriage in the form of an Italian gondola was executed in England in the 1770s, presumably on the basis of a sketch by S. Butler and I. Linell. It was presented to Empress Catherine the Great from Count Orlov. The carriage rests on horizontal springs, has two turn-easing devices, an axle-pivot and footholds. Decor of the carriage reflects the influence of two styles - rococo and classicism. It is adorned with magnificent wood carving of laurel and oak leaves, flower garlands, banner and trophies and covered with a thin layer of gold which gives the impression of carved metal. The murals and gilded carved wooden reliefs, complemented with a full sculpture by the Paris craftsmen Breghteil, create an impression of luxury and elegance.
