In the second half of the XVIIIth century carriages became technically more advanced. The bodies were suspended on four leather thongs making them more stable in motion. Vertical metal springs made it possible to raise the body higher off the ground. The travelling carriage of Catherine the Great executed in Paris in 1763 by the Berlin craftsman Breiteil is of this type, which is called "berline". The body of the carriage is adorned with painting on mythological subjects.
