Carriage

Carriage. Germany, Berlin, 1746. Maker J.M. Hoppenhaupt
Wonder of delicate workmanship is a splendid carriage executed by the Berlin craftsman Johann Michael Hoppenhaupt in 1746. It gives an impression of lightness and elegance thanks to the skilful wood carving depicting laurel leaves, scrolls, shells and sculptures of mythological deities. Rococo features are clearly evident in the form of the body and in the decor. The body is suspended on six leather thongs and has springs and a turning wheel. Having been presented to Empress Elizabeth from Friedrich II of Prussia, the carriage was used during coronation festivities and was renovated many times during the XVIIIth century.
