Rococo carriages

Carriage. Austria, Vienna, 1741-1742. Belonged to Empress Elizabeth, daughter of Peter the Great
The most striking examples of rococo carriages in the collection are those made in Berlin, Vienna and Paris in the period 1740-1750. Their structural system reflect the advanced tendencies of their time; all have axle-pivots and link-springs. The doors and windows are covered with mirrored glass. Gilded wood carving, bronze fittings and paintings are significant features of their ornamentation.

Two carriages belonged to Elizabeth were executed by the Viennese craftsmen in 1740-1742. They both are closed, one of them is a two-seater and other is of the coupe type.
