Hall 9. Royal carriages of the XVIth to XVIIIth century

Hall 9. The Armoury Chamber
The Armoury collection of carriages includes works by leading European and Russian carriage-makers as well  as architects and artists. It allows to trace development of carriage craft in Russia and Western Europe, enables to judge changes of form, design and decor of ceremonial carriages, from most ancient, e.g. the carriage of Boris Godunov of the XVIth century,

to the late XVIIIth  century  graceful and comfortable ones, those elonging to Empress Catherine the Great.

The collection is particularly valuable as all the carriages have survived without substantial alterations. Besides, names of carriages’ creators and owners – Russian sovereigns and members of their families – are known.
