Showcase 12. Russian coloured enamels

Bowl. Russia, Solvychegodsk, the late ХVIIth century
In the late XVIIth century the Solvychegodsk (Usolsk) coloured enamels became popular because of their vividness and coloration. At that time enamels were used for painting of silver utensils in imitation of precious porcelains. A special feature of the articles, represented in the showcase 12, is a combination of picturesque multicoloured image with smooth white coating as a background. The ceramics were floriated, decorated with figures of animals and birds, Biblical subjects, genre scenes etc.
