The Annunciation of Ustyug

"Annunciation of Ustyug". Icon. Second half of the XVIth century.

The icon was executed in the second part of the XVIth century on the order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It is a copy of the ancient icon of the XIVth century that was brought from Novgorod to Moscow (nowadays, it is being preserved in the Tretyakov Gallery). The image is individual and quite original as shows the mystery of the Child on the Virgin's lap. One can see the image of the future Holy Baby on her chest.
