The Last Judgment

The Judgment Day. Fresco of the western wall. 1652-1666.
The western wall of the Archangel’s Cathedral is dedicated to the Judgment Day composition. The key of the composition is the image of Christ sitting on a throne. Christ is confronted by our Lady and John the Precursor praying. Adam and Eva are at Christ’s feet. An immense serpentine, whose head rises to Adam’s heel, symbolizes the Sin that separated the humankind into saints and sinners.

The images of princes with nimbuses are part of the composition. Just like raised saints, the princes seem to come to the Judgment of God to heir to the eternal life.
