Shrine of Tsarevich Dmitry

Cover of the shrine of Saint Tsarevich Dmitry. 1630
In 1630, on the order of Tsar Michael Fyodorovich, for the relics of St. prince Dmitry there was created a silver feretory. The order was executed by team of makers under the guidance of Gavrila Evdokimov. The former, wooden feretory was sent to Uglich as its citizens asked for. The lid of the new burial place was adorned with a relief figure of Tsarevich in a ceremonial vestment. In 1630-s,  over the feretory placed at the south-eastern pillar of the cathedral there was constructed a white-stone carved marquee. In  1812, during the Kremlin’s capture by Napoleons’ troops the silver feretory disappeared, and the lid was hidden by believers. It has survived till our days and is on display in the Armoury Chamber.

The relics of the Tsarevich were also hidden by Moscovites and were not desecrated. The new feretory was erected in 1813 thanks to Avgustin, Metropolitan of Moscow. That is the feretory presented in the cathedral nowadays.
