Deesis

Deisis tier. "Saviour Almighty". Theophan the Greek (?) Late XIVth century
13 icons of the Deesis represent full-length portraits of saints, praying for salvation of the sinful mankind to the Saviour Almighty, placed in the centre of the tier. His image is one of the most significant and expressive within the many-tier composition of the iconostasis.

The Deesis tier of the Annunciation Cathedral includes images of Our Lady and John the Precursor, the archangels Michael and Gabriel, apostles Paul and Peter, fathers of the church St. John Chrysostom and St. Basil the Great. Icons with the martyrs St. George and St. Dmitry as well as stylites Daniel and Simeon are placed along the northern and eastern cathedral’s walls. The central 9 icons of the late XIVth century are considered to be executed by Pheophan the Greek, who was working at that time at court of the Moscow prince.
