"The Tree of Jesse"
The mural "Tree of Jesse" (1547 – 1551) occupies the vaults and wall of the north-western gallery. Its motif is a genealogical tree of Christ based on Bible texts. The composition includes over 200 figures, connected with each other by image of a climbing vine. The trunk goes from north to west, representing the ancestors of Christ and Our Lady as the final image. Among figures of the Saints, the antique philosophers (Virgil, Homer, Plutarch etc.) and Russian princes (Daniel , Dmitry Donskoy etc.) are also depicted.
