Burial places

The Assumption Cathedral. The interior"s central part with the iconostasis
Since 1326, as Metropolitan Peter was buried in the cathedral that was still under construction, the cathedral was burial place of Russian Metropolitans, and simce the XVIth century to 1700 – of Russian Patriarchs.
There are 19 burial places in the cathedral. Since the late XVIth century on the burial places there were mounted brick gravestones with white-stone epitaphs, and in the early XXth century the gravestones were placed in metal cases. The burials of Holy Hierarchs are marked with high marquees – vaults. The relics of Moscow miracle-workers Peter, Jonah, Filippos and Hermogenes lay in wooden burial places adorned with metal platens.
