Since 1326, as Metropolitan Peter was buried in the cathedral that was still under construction, the cathedral was burial place of Russian Metropolitans, and simce the XVIth century to 1700 – of Russian Patriarchs. There are 19 burial places in the cathedral. Since the late XVIth century on the burial places there were mounted brick gravestones with white-stone epitaphs, and in the early XXth century the gravestones were placed in metal cases. The burials of Holy Hierarchs are marked with high marquees – vaults. The relics of Moscow miracle-workers Peter, Jonah, Filippos and Hermogenes lay in wooden burial places adorned with metal platens.
