The remarkable international exhibition "Wooden sculpture from the Russian land", put on in Rome, the Capitoline Museums, represents the exhibit items of several Russian museums, including the Kremlin museums.
Artworks of wooden church sculpture are of rare occurrence both in Russia and Europe, where the last large exhibition was organized over 30 years ago, in Paris, 1973.
8 items of wooden plastic arts from the Moscow Kremlin Museums reflect all the types of wooden carving, related to church tradition. Carved icons and hinged clam-shell constructions, icon-cases' sculptures, reliquaries' lids, executed by the carvers of Moscow, Novgorod, Russian northland in the XVI-XVIIth centuries, are of different styles and experience levels. Items, created, in one case, with a high level of excellence, similar to the best school of icon-painting, in other - with artistic primitivism, seem to be the masterpieces of the Russian folk art.
Perhaps, very Italy, full of the Antique, Renaissance, Baroque sculptures, is the perfect place for the exposition, where visitors are to get acquainted with such a peculiar art tradition.
