The forming of the Numismatics collection of Moscow Kremlin Museums is connected with the history of the Armoury Chamber. In the early XVIII century various ancient coins were brought here. In the XIX century the collection became more multitudinous and interesting. In 1883, ancient coins and medals were placed in nine special showcases of the Armoury display.
Nowadays, the Numismatics collection of Moscow Kremlin Muaseums contains more than 7000 exhibits. Its main part are Russian and foreign coins, from Antique to modern ones. Here are Old Russian silver coins of Svyatopolk the Damned’s times, grivna bars of the XI-XV centuries, Russian coins of the XIV-XX centuries. We should also mark a section of USSR coins including both coins issued for regular circulation and unique examples of proving fifty-copeck pieces of 1941 and rare variants from the series of non-issued coins of 1985.
The collection also presents rather rare Russian service gilt coin-looking insignia of the XVI-XVII centuries. The earliest name insignia is the gold one in a half of the “Ugorsky” in a silver frame with a carved inscription on it about the conferment of a stol’nik (servant in feasts) V. Fefilatev by Tsar Michael Fyodorovich in 1640.
More than fourty thousands coins come from hoards and coin complexes of the XIV-early XX century. They were found in the Moscow Kremlin’s area. Here we should mention the two hoards of the Golden Horde’s coins: the one of Russian bars and tartar coins of the late XIV century and the other of the Golden Horde’s and Crimean coins of the XV century. Some hoards of Russian coins of the XVI-XVII centuries are unique by their compound. One hoard comprises more than 1500 copecks with the name of Polish Prince Vladislav, who was Tsar in 1610-1612. Another pretty large hoard of the mid XVII century (about 35000 exhibits) contains more than 6000 half-copeck coins and 5800 quarter-copecks.
The collection paper money and metal stamps of the XVIII-XX centuries is not large. It numbers about 200 items and comprises only the main types and basic fields of the bonds’ use.
